USTA Mid-Atlantic's Junior Player Scholarship Program is available to help defray costs associated with learning, training, and competing in tennis so that more young people can participate in tennis no matter their background, income, or zip code. Scholarships increase access to youth programs and their character-building benefits for those who might not otherwise have the opportunity. Players at any level of the sport - beginner, intermediate, and advanced - are eligible to apply and Section ranking is not a requirement.

Prior to submitting an application, please ensure you have read and understood the following scholarship program guidelines.

What is the deadline to submit an application?

The application deadline is October 17, 2022, or when funding is exhausted. We encourage you to apply early as applications will be evaluated in the order in which they are received. Incomplete or partial applications will not be considered.

Who can apply for a Junior Player Scholarship?

  • Players at any level of the sport - beginner, intermediate, and advanced;
  • Applicants must be between the ages of 7-18;
  • Applicants must have an active USTA membership (USTA Junior Memberships are at no cost to register) and reside in the Mid-Atlantic Section (DC, MD, VA, or eastern and southern WV);
  • This program is based on merit and financial need.

What criteria must be met for each scholarship tier?

What expenses are authorized under the Junior Player Scholarship?

This scholarship program is offered as reimbursement and awards can help with costs associated with:

  • Introductory lessons, camps, or training fees;
  • USTA program and/or event fees (tournaments, Junior Team Tennis, Junior Circuit, etc.);
  • Equipment expenses (tennis shoes, racquets, strings);
  • Travel fees (i.e. hotel or transportation fees only associated with attending a program/event).

How long is the grant decision process?

Approximately fifteen (15) business days from the date of the application deadline for evaluation, processing, and notification. Your application will be evaluated by a combination of reviewers from the Mid-Atlantic Section.

If awarded, what are the next steps?

If awarded, you will receive an award letter and will be asked to provide the following documentation within forty-five (45) business days of receipt of the award letter:

  • Countersigned award letter;
  • Proof of actual purchase orders or invoices of authorized expenses dated as of August 17, 2022 or later;
  • Recipient Testimonial to include 1-2 photos of the applicant participating in a tennis event/program and a final narrative of how the scholarship award has impacted his/her tennis experience this year.

We estimate approximately fifteen (15) business days for the Section to process the scholarship award after receipt of all required documentation. Please note, that proof of purchase documentation must be submitted at one time. If your total expenditure is less than the awarded amount, the balance will be forfeited. The scholarship award must be utilized for qualified expenses in 2022 and all documentation must be received within forty-five (45) business days of receipt of the award letter.

Please contact Megan Driscoll at driscoll@mas.usta.com if you have any questions about the scholarship program.

I understand and agree that this Release includes any claims based on the actions, omissions, or negligence of USTA MAS, its employees, agents, volunteers, coaches, and representatives. I, on behalf of myself and the Participant, understand and acknowledge and agree that USTA MAS is in no way responsible for its own negligence or the negligence of third parties in connection with the USTA MAS Event.

I understand that in proceeding with use of the Footage, USTA MAS will do so in full reliance on the foregoing permission.

Further, I, on behalf of myself and the Participant, give irrevocable and perpetual permission that any photographs, videos, recordings and interviews of me and the Participant that I voluntarily share with USTA MAS ("Shared Media") may also be used by USTA MAS, USTA and its affiliated organizations, successors, assigns and licensees, in whole or in part, for all purposes whatsoever and in any manner or media now known or developed in the future.  I now grant, as to the USTA MAS and its national and affiliated organizations, successors, assigns and licensees, the irrevocable right to use perpetually throughout the world, in all media now and hereafter known or devised, in whole or in part, my and the Participant's image, likeness, name, biographical information, actions, performance, voice, conversations, quotes and material spoken as captured in any such Shared Media, in whole or in part, for all purposes whatsoever and in any manner or media now known or developed in the future.

I, on behalf of myself and the Participant, understand that the USTA MAS Event might not be made available or that the cost to attend and/or participate in the USTA MAS Event would be significantly greater if I were to choose not to sign this Release, and I, on behalf of myself and the Participant, agree that execution of the Release is a reasonable bargain in exchange for attending and/or participating in the USTA MAS Event.

If I have signed a separate general waiver/release of liability connected to the USTA MAS Event, the terms of that waiver/release are wholly incorporated into this Release, and the terms of this Release are incorporated into the separate general waiver/release.

I acknowledge and agree that my and/or the Participant’s attendance and/or participation in the USTA MAS Event or an electronic signature will have the same force and effect as an original signature and an agreement and acceptance to this Release for all purposes.
